They had a guest list. A venue shortlist. A timeline. And the more they planned it, the more they wanted to walk away from all of it.
Giada and Matteo are from Italy. They got engaged with a traditional celebration in mind – the kind that involves a large venue, extended family, a packed schedule, and months of meticulous coordination. But somewhere in the middle of that planning process, they had an honest conversation: Is this actually what we want?
The answer led them to Maui.
They flew across the world, said their vows above the ocean at Ironwoods Beach, played in the water afterward, they realized they had the type of wedding day they truly dreampt of.
If you’re reading this and that story sounds a little familiar, this post is for you.

Can you get married in Maui without guests?
Yes. Many couples choose a ceremony with just the two of them, along with their officiant and wedding vendors. No guest list required. Hawaii’s marriage license process is open to all couples, including international visitors, and is straightforward to complete before your ceremony.
Can international couples get married in Maui?
Absolutely. Couples from around the world, including Italy, the UK, Australia, and beyond, travel to Maui for destination weddings each year. Hawaii’s marriage requirements are the same for visitors as for residents, making it one of the most accessible destinations for a destination elopement.
Why do couples choose an intimate Maui wedding instead of a large wedding at home?
Most couples who choose a Maui elopement aren’t running away from a wedding; they’re running toward an experience that feels more like them. Fewer logistics, more presence, a stunning setting, and the freedom to structure the day around what truly matters to them. For many, that shift happens mid-planning when the guest list, the budget, and the family expectations start to outweigh the joy of getting married.
Is Ironwoods Beach a good location for a Maui wedding ceremony?
Yes! It’s one of Maui’s most dramatic and photogenic ceremony locations. Ironwoods Beach sits along the northwest coastline and features rugged cliffs, sweeping ocean views, and a peaceful atmosphere that suits intimate, photography-forward ceremonies beautifully.
How do you start planning an intimate Maui wedding?
The first step is knowing what kind of experience you want: just the two of you, a small witness-only ceremony, or something slightly larger. From there, a Maui wedding planner can guide you through location permits, photography coordination, ceremony logistics, and marriage license requirements (all remotely!), before you arrive.
There’s a specific kind of exhaustion that comes from planning a wedding you’re not sure you want.
It’s not that large weddings are wrong – they’re meaningful, joyful, and exactly right for many couples. But for others, the planning process becomes the first sign that the celebration they’re building doesn’t reflect their relationship.
Giada and Matteo hit that moment. The more they worked through venues, guest lists, timelines, and logistics, the more they wanted something smaller. Quieter. Theirs. That’s what brought them to Maui.
For couples in that same headspace, there’s something important to understand: wanting a simpler wedding doesn’t mean settling for less. It often means choosing more – more presence, more flexibility, more intention about how you spend the most important day of your relationship.

Maui appears at the top of destination wedding lists for reasons that go beyond the obvious scenery.
The island offers warm weather, dramatic coastlines, golden-hour light, and enough landscape variety (where else can you find beaches with black lava-rock cliffs and white sandy beaches all in one location?) that no two ceremonies look alike. It also sits far enough from home that arriving feels like a genuine adventure.
For international couples, especially, Maui offers a sense of separation from the social expectations that can make planning a traditional wedding feel suffocating. You’re not in your hometown. The extended family isn’t down the street. The day belongs to you.
Hawaii’s marriage licensing process is also particularly accessible for international couples because there’s no waiting period, no residency requirement, and licenses can typically be arranged in advance of your arrival.

Ironwoods Beach sits along Maui’s northwest coastline, where the shoreline gives way to dramatic cliffs and wide-open ocean views.
Unlike some of Maui’s busier beaches, Ironwoods has a quieter, more expansive feel. There’s room to breathe. The backdrop gives photographers something to work with in any lighting condition.
For Giada and Matteo, Ironwoods provided exactly the kind of scenery they were looking for: visually stunning, uncrowded, and naturally suited to a ceremony that didn’t need decoration to feel beautiful.

There were no guests, no reception schedule, and no agenda beyond the ceremony itself.
They spent the entire day together in their nearby villa. They had breakfast, watched recorded love notes they had made for each other, presented gifts to one another, and got dressed, hearing the other talk about their excitement. It felt unhurried and fully present. At ceremony time, they made their way down to the sand for a heartfelt exchange with tradewinds softly blowing. Afteward, they had time to play, to laugh, and to fully take in the afternoon.

One practical advantage of an intimate Maui wedding that often gets overlooked: the photos are amazing.
When there’s no crowd to manage, no reception layout to work around, and no timeline pressure pulling the photographer in twelve directions, the whole day becomes a portrait session in one of the most visually striking environments on earth.
Giada and Matteo’s gallery reflects that. The ceremony images, the shoreline portraits, the candid post-ceremony moments… they tell a complete story of a real day, not a curated performance.
